While reading about David Smith, I found it very interesting that he left his art very ambiguous and open to multiple interpretations up to the point where he never even gave guidelines on how to view it. So, after receiving found objects to work with, I attempted to construct my own sculpture and to be honest, my inspiration is even questionable to me. I suppose I felt at ease with the metallic objects of gold, silver, copper, and others, but in true David Smith spirit, you can decide.

To create my final project, I decided to use the found object sculpture by recreating each component in SketchUp. I started tracing the picture I had, but I felt more inclined to tackle each piece separately. Many of the textures I chose are very “pattern oriented,” (as I am known to be by teachers)—consisting of a carpet, stone, brick and even customized textures. In one scultpure, I included a picture I took on my spare time, a painting by van Gogh, and a picture of one of my favorite musicians. I was not sure where to start with an environment, so I decided to start searching for pictures first—this led to the selection of a picture by photographer Justin Gaynor, which basically evovled into a waterfront park scene featuring sculptures along the path.I hope that the viewer understands that there is only as much to understand as you want to understand.
