Artist Statement

For this project we were assigned to make a space that we liked from our memory. With this place we created, we were to choose three words to represent it. I chose to create a place that represents my church. This place is important to me because I used to go there every Saturday as a little boy. Growing up, this place is where I had many friends who were like family to me. I have a lot of memories in this place.

The three words I chose to focus on were, populated, music, and loud. It was easy to come up with ideas to make my place populated. I simply added people, but the process was hard. Representing music wasnÅ't difficult. I quickly thought of musical notes when I decided to use music as an element. I placed the musical notes on almost every surface of my space. Even the outer wall has musical notes because thatÅ's how I wanted to represent loud. The music would penetrate the walls of the church sometimes, so you could hear it on the outside.

When first getting the assignment, I had no clue of what place IÅ'd use. When I chose my church, I thought of one piece we had seen in the museum's exhibition, and that was the Himilayas Sister's Living Room. This space represented a home that we went into, and had videos projecting everywhere. What inspired me was how the artist painted a wall as another room in the home, as if you were to walk into the wall to enter the Å"room.Å" I took this into consideration when putting the music on my walls.
