Artist Statement

The assignment that was given was to take a space where we normally spend time and to modify it in any way that would change our experience in this place. I chose to re-create the library at which I work. I chose this place because I am here everyday, and I feel that there can be many changes done to it to that would change the way people view and approach the idea of a library. Currently, people view a library as a place where there can be no interaction between each other, and where they go just to read and study in total seclusion. I hope that with my changes, people will see the library as a place that has much more to offer and a chance for them to learn about a world outside of their own. People will find new ways of going about how they view the world.

I decided to design my space into two parts. The top is the childrenÅ's floor and the bottom is the adult floor. For the children, I decided to make everything of light so that they would find this space more interesting. Lights on the floor will light up as they take a step. The book shelves are also made of different colors, and lights on the walls will frequently change position.

For the adults, I decided to make everything more futuristic and advanced, which would provide a more enhanced way of learning. I made the walls and shelves translucent as a way to show that we are not limited to what is around us. I also decided to add in floating information screens that hover around the floor assisting people with any information that they need.

I wanted to make these changes because I feel that if everything in life is just kept the way it is then people will eventually lose interest and then there wonÅ't be any progress in society. By changing a space like the library, I am changing something very traditional and making it more appealing to modern standards. The piece that influenced me the most for this project was the dance floor by Piotr Uklanski. This piece inspired me because it was very out of the ordinary for a museum with all of the lights it had and the loud music. Although it was different, it didnÅ't change the museum itself, it just gave it an edge. That is what I tried to convey in my space. I wanted to add to it to make it more interesting without changing the purpose of a library.
