Artist Statement

My piece is based on a piece called Eye to Eye by Louise Bourgeois.

The class was observing the works of Louise Bourgeois. We were assigned to write small stories about the art shown to us. I wrote a few different stories and then I chose my Eye to Eye piece to work on.

When I saw the piece I thought of gossip and togetherness. I pictured a group of people looking the same and acting the same but also wanting freedom from all of it. As I began to write the piece it started to create itself. The meaning is now open to interpretation.

I added whispers and echoes to the background of my piece. I felt it would give my piece a more haunting effect because I wasn’t encouraging the idea of everyone being the same. Exactly the opposite. I wanted to show people how sad it would be if everything and everyone were the same.
