In Cell I, Louise Bourgeois placed text in a part of the installation that made it hard to see. To me, that made her words more effective.

I started to think about the way things are placed on billboards are forced into your head, and the idea of someone who would completely block out that type of information. It’s about being extremely curious about someone because he or she isn’t an open book.

The writing part of the project was very challenging for me. My first few drafts of this piece were pretty much me restating my one idea over and over, so I tried to make some things actually happen to make it a piece instead of just rambling. The piece is colloquial and switches between past and present tense. I tried to write it in a conversational way, as if I was telling the story to a neighbor.

In an audio piece that is trying to convey a message or convince the listener of something, music and sound effects can be very distracting. Since I didn’t have that intention, I decided to experiment and use a lot of outside ambient sounds I captured on a rainy day in my neighborhood.
