Artist Statement

Our fall 2007 assignment was to photograph our surroundings and try to point out something specific. Something that was worth taking a picture of. As I walked around the city, I noticed things that were broken, discarded, and decaying.

When I had my camera with me, I started taking pictures of trash and dying plants. I wanted to show them from an artistic point of view. With the photographs, I tried to make the environment seem beautiful. I'm not trying to say that trash is beautiful, but I thought that if I could make something good out of it, I should.

I went into empty lots and kneeled on the sewer, just trying to get a good picture. Trying to turn this negative environment into a positive form of art Is a way of showing that even the most negative-looking things in the world can be turned into something beautiful.
