While viewing this image, visitors responded to one of the questions Catherine Opie posed about portraits.

  • Select one image and describe what it seems to express about the person shown.

  • Do you think the artist is telling the truth about him- or herself?

  • If you created a self-portrait, what would you want it to convey?

Nan Goldin is one of my favorite contemporary photographers. This self portrait is a great example of her ability to capture "raw" emotions in her work. To me, her work embodies the struggle, the changes, all around our world & the complexity of relationships and also the joy of being alive.

I see an honest attitude but she doesn't need to tell truth, truth is not a statement, it is a free belief and the photograph questions the viewer more than it questions her.
