My proposal is to change the Guggenheim main building itself, I have created many different ideas for my proposal all of which are based mainly around color and the idea that by changing one tiny detail of an object you can completely change how the observer sees it. My reasoning behind picking the building for my site was that I felt that I could convey my message most efficiently using the building as my base, it was already quite abstract and revolutionary when it was built. I felt that by adding a spin to it (changing colors, etc) it would help people see things differently, the way Buren used the color gels to change the windows throughout the museum was really my main inspiration in creating this piece. When we visited the rotunda and saw the gels on the ceiling it totally changed my view on what are can truly be, he made it very simple and that’s the main point I'm trying to show with my proposal.
In changing the color of the building I would like to use colored gels, many different types of paints from metallic to pearlescent. In some situations depending on the model, I would like to actually cover the building in bubble wrap, or silk so if people wanted they could come up and touch the building getting a multi-sensual experiance both visual and in feeling the materials, it would totally change the experience to both see and feel the presentation. Most art you are not allowed to touch, so in allowing people to touch the exhibit I think that it would add to the enjoyment and it would also be sort of revolutionary to cover an entire building in bubble wrap.
