Process: About the Projects
Over six weeks, ten students from the New York City area examined and discussed the work of David Smith, on view at the Guggenheim Museum from February 3 - May 14, 2006, then created their own site-specific digital sculptures using traditional and digital media. They presented their work at the museum on May 10th, 2006.
The group began by exploring the work Hudson River Landscape (1951), a work inspired by Smith's sketches of train rides along the Hudson River. Students created wax sculptures of their own, based on their journeys to the Guggenheim.
After looking at Smith's use of found and industrial materials, drawings and his careful documentation of completed works in the natural landscape, students used Adobe PhotoShop and line-drawing to create a template for their projects.
The resulting digital drawings informed their final sculptures, built in a 3D modeling program called SketchUp. Students then digitally created the ideal environment in which their sculptures should be viewed.
